About CommonAI Compute
The process of procuring cloud infrastructure lacks transparency. It is far too easy to pay for more compute than is required or end up tied to a single, large cloud vendor. Many startups don’t have the funds to hire an IT department to create the right setup and have limited buying power because their compute needs are intermittent, relatively small and bursty.
As an industry, we can do better. We need to make it possible for all organisations to access the GPUs they need and configure the AI development environment with ease. CommonAI Compute has set out to disrupt the market and make it easy to access the compute and infrastructure you need for your technology to be successful.
CommonAI Compute’s goal is to give transparent, more affordable access to cloud compute globally. We want to make AI teams, startups and enterprises look like much bigger organisations by giving them access to expertise in compute and infrastructure. By making it easier to access compute from different vendors we help you get the best deal.
The CommonAI ecosystem
The CommonAI Ecosystem is centred around CommonAI CIC, a non-profit members organisation set up to build and host open assets. By bringing organisations together with complementary expertise, we can compete with some of the largest companies in the AI world.
CommonAI Compute was founded to provide compute services to the CommonAI community and its members.
Our common mission is to provide a new backbone for deeptech AI. By enabling collaboration among those on the frontline of development, we can change how they foster innovation, establish competitive advantage through enhanced productivity and access both compute and knowledge.
Each part of CommonAI approaches the same mission with its own platform. Our reach will grow as AI continues to accelerate.
The unique structure of the CommonAI ecosystem allows us to collaborate and solve engineering challenges like no other organisation.
What are we building at CommonAI?
Hear Dr Rosemary Francis, CTO CommonAI Compute explain how the parts of CommonAI fit together:
CommonAI CIC a non-profit engineering company providing unconflicted shared resources, intellectual property (IP) and know-how to members of the collaborative engineering ‘club’ it operates, helping them bring better AI/ML products to market faster and more cheaply than they could do alone.
CommonAI Compute Ltd offering CommonAI CIC members access to discounted GPU time (and supporting them in leveraging it).
Thematic AI Venture Funds a planned series of venture funds, each aligned to specific CommonAI CIC programmes, managed by Anthemis and other leading fund managers, providing capital to foster the growth of AI startups.
The CommonAI Compute Leadership Team
Behind CommonAI is an experienced group of mission-driven investors, entrepreneurs and engineers. From their base in Silicon Fen, the heart of the UK’s technology ecosystem, they have been part of teams that have created groundbreaking, Cambridge-born successes including lowRISC CIC (stewards of the OpenTitan project), CHERI Alliance and Raspberry Pi.
That same depth runs through our engineering. Across the team we have designed processor architectures, worked on some of the world’s largest computers, and led high-performance computing and cloud strategy at scale. It is hard-won expertise in compute for data science and AI that spans the full stack, from silicon to the workloads researchers actually run — and it is why we know how to make compute not just available, but genuinely productive.
